For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.
Hebrews 4:12, New Living Translation
Has the Holy Spirit used His sword to expose your innermost thoughts? Your deepest, most secret desires? He often does in my life, and last week was no exception.
He reminded me of Christ’s faithfulness. On Monday the Holy Spirit prompted me to recall Philippians 4:18. My pastor quoted it the day before. This verse triggers memories of many times Christ has strengthened me.
- He spurred me to act when I was inclined to do nothing.
- He fortified my faith to endure several trials.
- He bolstered my patience through tumultuous years.
- He reinforced my self-control when I was exasperated.
By uncovering these memories on Monday, the Holy Spirit prepared me for the week ahead. He knew what was ahead.
He led me to truth for a current situation. We had a bit of a family crisis this week. It went unresolved for several days. I knew what Jesus taught about worry, but I struggled to do anything else. Jesus’ words renewed my faith in God’s provision, and reminded me that worry had not changed a thing.
I surrendered the issue in prayer to God, and trusted Him to meet our needs. He resolved the crisis the following day. He even tucked in a surprise blessing. I love it when God reminds me that He’s thinking about me!
The Holy Spirit challenged me to re-read a familiar story. I knew it well. But He knew it contained important truth for a puzzling situation. This time I saw a man demonstrate great faith one day, and extreme bitterness the next. God gave him a second chance, and then a third. Through Spirit-opened eyes this story unraveled a 21st century mystery. I also saw myself and thank God for second chances. Third chances. Sometimes, many chances.
Faith is my part of a covenant with God. It is the only path to salvation. It also unleashes God’s provision, Jesus’ strength, the Holy Spirit’s wisdom, and so much more. And when I open the Bible, expecting to hear from God, the Spirit makes His word come alive.
How has the Holy Spirit made His word come alive in your life?
